Split Light Studio also have released Motoride Rollercoaster VR and Solar System VR which have both gained a “Mostly Positive” review rating on Steam. The studio specializes in the creation of VR movies and games, as well as 3D and 360 movies. Afterlife VR sees the player take on the role of Adam Bernhard, a young rookie police officer on a night patrol, when he receives a call that will change his life forever. The horrific journey takes Adam deep within the Black Rose mental hospital walls in a plot not dissimilar to Outlast. For PlayStation owners, this should be another great horror game for 2023.

The release to PS VR 2 will see Afterlife VR join great games such as Before Your Eyes get a PlayStation VR 2 update. Regretfully, a specific release date has not been announced, with the trailer simply aiming for 2023. The developer, Vahe Asloyan, does however talk quite candidly about the plot and the gameplay, stating that there are “mind games” and puzzles alongside the monsters and patients of the Black Rose mental hospital.

Asloyan also mentions a robust AI system that is intended to diversify the scares in Afterlife VR, which sounds reminiscent of the Xenomorph in Alien Isolation. Creative Assembly may be working on a sequel, but for now games such as Afterlife VR are the perfect pit stop on the way to bigger releases, especially considering the added scariness produced by entering the game in VR.

Afterlife VR is joining a plethora of solid games on the PS VR2. The future of VR looks very bright for Sony as it continues to bolster its PlayStation VR 2 catalog. While its predecessor had many great VR titles, and was very well accepted both critically and commercially, the PS VR2 already feels like a greater step forwards to the goal of VR games being second nature, or as some people may say “the future of gaming.”

A lot of players are yet to get their hands on a PS5, and there have been rumors that PlayStation has cut back on production of the PS VR2, however the latter rumor has since been dispelled, and the ease of access to current gen equipment (whether it be a PS5 or a new graphics card) seems to be easing up. This means that quite soon more and more people will be able to pick up a headset such as the PS VR2 and enter spooky worlds such as Afterlife VR.

Afterlife VR is available on Oculus and Vive and is currently in development for PlayStation VR2.
