The Sons of Prometheus also play a vital role in inadvertently helping Aloy and her allies figure out how to defeat the Far Zeniths. Being Oseram rebels, they are also direct rivals to the Carja and harbor hatred toward the Sun Kingdom and Tenakth peace. However, their alliance with Sylens is what convinced the group to join forces with Regalla and her rebels. This was a great way to connect the two Horizon games and showed the players that conflict within the world would never simply disappear.

The Sons of Prometheus

Horizon Zero Dawn focused on the downfall of the old Sun-King Jiran and the Carja in Meridian, which forced many of the Jiran faithful to flee the Sun Kingdom. Of the Oseram that fled, the one that would go on to have a major impact in the story of Horizon Forbidden West is Asera. After leaving Meridian, she was approached by Sylens, who convinced her to form a new group of Oseram rebels that would aid Regalla in taking control of the Tenakth tribes. In return, Sylens promised to give this new group access to focuses and machine overrides to challenge Aloy and her allies in the Forbidden West.

While Sylens’ ultimate motive was to use an army of machines to destroy the Far Zenith base, aligning his goal with Aloy’s, he was still adamant that taking over the Tenakth would be the only way to stop the antagonistic group. With Sylens’ resources, the Sons of Prometheus continued to learn about the Far Zeniths and even developed a weapon that would neutralize their shields and make them vulnerable. However, including the Sons of Prometheus’ was more to tie in the events of the first game with that of the second one and give the overall storyline a better sense of continuity as the Oseram and Carja rivalry that dominated Zero Dawn found its way into the Forbidden West.

Horizon Zero Dawn

As an Oseram, Asera was subjected to the same horrors of the Carja that many of the other tribes experienced during the events of the Red Raid. Following the liberation of the Sun Kingdom, and the ascent of Sun King Avad, Asera was under the leadership of Dervahl, who would not forgive the Sun Kingdom for the Red Raids. She aligned with Dervahl’s forces and conspired to overthrow Avad. However, these plans were foiled and Asera was arrested, where she remained for most of the time in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Between the events of Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Asera escaped the prison and continued to lead a group that was still loyal to Dervahl and his ideals. This group would later become the Sons of Prometheus and would go on to be a major player in the events of the second game by figuring out how to defeat the Far Zeniths. However, even after leaving the Sun Kingdom and allying themselves with Sylens, the Sons of Prometheus, like Regalla and her rebels, maintained their hatred towards the Carja and the Sun Kingdom and vowed to kill them all.

Horizon Forbidden West

Along with Sylens, the Sons of Prometheus were responsible for the rise of power of Regalla and her rebels. As the groups strived to gain control of the Tenakth tribes to mount an assault on the Far Zenith base, under the guidance of Sylens, the Sons of Prometheus were able to create a weapon that destroyed the impenetrable shield of the Far Zenith members, successfully killing Verbana Sutter. This weapon would eventually prove instrumental to Aloy foiling the plans of the Far Zenith and ultimately bringing an end to the conflict in Horizon Forbidden West.

Unlike Horizon Zero Dawn, Asera and the Sons of Prometheus were a hidden group in the sequel but remained a thorn in Aloy’s path. Their pivotal role in the fight against the Far Zeniths, and providing machines for Regalla, made them a vital aspect of furthering the Horizon Forbidden West story, and their connection to Sun-King Jiran meant they also connected the plots of the two games. While the Sons of Prometheus may not show up in the next installment of the Horizon series, their contributions to Sylens will undoubtedly prove useful for the next threat that is heading toward Earth.

Horizon Forbidden West’s antagonist groups are a major step above those in the first game, giving players an opportunity to understand the brutality of the Red Raids. Since the Tenakth were subject to a lot of the Carja’s evil will, having the Sons of Prometheus in the game proved to form a real connection between Regalla and Dervahl. Their alliance with Sylens and Regalla, as well as their contribution to the downfall of the Far Zeniths, made them a vital group in the Horizon series and helped connect the conflict between the two games.

Horizon Forbidden West is available for PS4 and PS5.
