SPOILERS AHEAD FOR HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST AND GOD OF WAR 3This also shows how much inspiration Horizon took from elsewhere, and while it may not have been exactly intended, inspired, or anything like that, there are some notable similarities between Horizon’s Aloy and God of War 3’s Pandora. These comparisons go rather deep, though it should be stated that the specific context of each game changes the outcome (or in Aloy’s case, the outcome thus far).

Horizon’s Aloy vs. God of War 3’s Pandora

On their character alone, there are two important comparisons: they are both women of unnatural birth and they both operate like keys. Fans know Aloy is a clone of Elisabet Sobeck, meaning that she has no father or mother. She was instead created by GAIA; meanwhile, her DNA is able to open many doors that others cannot, thanks to her similarities with Elisabet. Pandora, on the other hand, was created by Hephaestus (NOT the Horizon Forbidden West antagonist) from the Earth as the first Woman. She also exists as a key to Pandora’s Box, almost literally.

Both play a very similar role in the worldbuilding of their perspective games. Pandora, and specifically Pandora’s Box, was built to contain all the evil of the Titanomachy. Yet, Pandora accidentally open the box and all this evil brings woe unto mankind. Pandora’s story in God of War 3 revolves around obtaining the box from Zeus, with which she plays a major role in Kratos’ discovery of hope’s power.

At the same time, Elisabet (who again Aloy is a clone of) was responsible for the Zero Dawn system responsible for recreating the world. Thanks to the Far Zeniths and Nemesis, it ended up wreaking havoc on that world as seen in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. But, GAIA—technically the cause and solution to this, like Pandora’s box—is what gives Aloy hope (that and her friends).

Finally, they have very similar father figures in Kratos and Rost. Kratos’ ends up guiding Pandora through much of God of War 3 (and vice versa), while it’s the same for Aloy and Rost in their background. Both originally had a family and had sought vengeance of them, including a daughter of their own. They both had notable marks on their face, and Rost (in vengeance) killed 12 men—the number of Greek Gods in the God of War franchise. Both of these men would impact, for the better, how Aloy and Pandora see the world. It’ll be interesting to see how this reflects in a Horizon threequel. If the comparisons continue, then Aloy may have to give her life as Pandora did (in a way), but these comparisons probably do not go that deep.

Horizon Forbidden West is available now on PS4 and PS5.
