DBZ: Kakarot itself is a pretty deep dive into the Dragon Ball Z anime, adapting almost the entirety of the show into the game in a way that the Dragon Ball games haven’t really done before. Of course, when it comes to honest trailers, every aspect of the media being “reviewed” is fair game to be verbally skewered.

Getting into specifics, Honest Trailers turned a few parts of the game into the butt of its jokes, from its anime-to-animation issues to its dissatisfactory power levels, repetitive target deaths, role-playing elements, and built-in subsystems. The Honest Trailer ended with Kakarot’s open-world being compared to the video game Superman 64, which isn’t flattering, to say the least. Superman 64 is widely considered to be one of the worst games of all time, which is an impressive feat in a strange way. DBZ: Kakarot didn’t have a bad reception when it launched; instead, overall, its reception thus far has been fairly mixed among Kakarot’s reviewers.
Many reviewers have praised the story of Kakarot, which is the same well-loved story from the anime, while simultaneously criticizing the game’s RPG elements–clearly, Honest Trailers really did notice a couple of flaws. Meanwhile, the game’s fanbase seems enthusiastic, having found plenty of reasons to appreciate what the game does well (and many are already speculating over what will come next for Kakarot and any potential DLC). But of course, Honest Trailers will poke fun at lots of games or movies regardless of whether they’ve been judged to be “good” or “bad,” so it’s not always about that, and thus began the Honest Trailers roast of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.
Either way, the trailer certainly hasn’t interfered with DBZ: Kakarot’s success; those who enjoy the game remain hard at work, uncovering Dragon Ball easter eggs and eagerly devouring everything the game has to offer.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available to play for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
